VHF-Tracking

In fleet tracking of ships, VHF tracking systems are often integrated with the Automatic Identification System (AIS). AIS transponders on vessels broadcast real-time data such as position, speed, heading, and vessel identity over VHF frequencies. This information is received by nearby ships, coastal stations, and satellites, enabling accurate tracking and collision avoidance.

Case Studies VHF-Tracking

Object & Local Area Tracking

Object Tracking with the vmsTRACK-PRO-CS is the perfect ‘made in Germany’ solution for intelligent, multifunctional real-time tracking on VHF frequencies. Cost-efficient and specially adapted to different requirements. Using customised VHF frequencies, a base station on land can create a defined “closed user group” of vessels in a local area (harbour or larger bay). At a preset time interval, position reports of these vessels can be transmitted to the control centre in real time and displayed there.

In the event of an emergency situation, the vmsTRACK-PRO-CS has a ‘one-push’ emergency button to send a recurring AIS MOB distress call to any AIS receiver within transmission range. The control centre as well as commercial vessels in the vicinity are able to support the rescue operation with rapid intervention.

SAT AIS (AIS via satellite communication)

Once this function has been activated in the programming software, the position data transmitted via VHF radio frequency can also be received by satellites and sent to special receiving stations on earth. There, the received position data is fed into the AIS system. This enables a comprehensive visualisation of ship movements worldwide. The vmsTRACK-PRO-CS thus combines the potential of terrestrial and satellite-based AIS position data.

The information available in near real time via satellite on ship positions around the world offers a high level of safety and hazard prevention.

Fleet Monitoring & Management

The movements of ferries or pilot boats in a harbour area or a larger bay can be easily tracked and monitored from the control centre. This also enables more effective deployment management.

Maritime Domain Awareness

For national authorities, the tracking and identification of ships in their own territory is increasingly becoming one of the most important issues in terms of coastal protection and coastal security. The possible scope for action ranges from differentiating between ‘friend or foe’ to monitoring suspicious behaviour of cargo ships in the coastal area. In this way, terror risks can be minimised.

The vmsTRACK-PRO-CS is an intelligent tracking system that fulfils all maritime border security requirements.

Long Range Tracking on Demand

Offshore areas that are far out of reach of coastal base stations are becoming increasingly important for ship management systems. But how can you know where the ships are when they are ‘out of sight’? At best, you have information about the route the ships have travelled before they arrive back in port. The answer to these questions is ‘Long Range Tracking On Demand’ with the vmsTRACK-PRO-CS and the patented ‘Request Message’ solution. With the on-demand technology in the vmsTRACK, recorded journey data from areas without a connection to the coastal station can be transmitted as soon as the ship returns to the coverage of the base receiving station. The data is therefore already available before the ship is back in harbour.

‘Tracking on demand’ is possible with the vmsTRACK units in combination with a special customised base station receiver unit.
